I met this monk in Sri Lanka in the temple complex of Anuradhapura.
With my brother I went for a walk in the temple complex during the day. When we wanted to go back with the bicycles in the evening, many very fancy dressed people came towards us. With music and small gifts for Buddha they passed us.
We joined the procession of people who walked to the temple complex. In the process, we noticed this monk. He stood as you see him on the photo the whole day on the same spot. At his feet a sign with the words:
“Photos permitted. Addressing Forbidden.”
It seemed strange and alien to me to portray the monk frontally. Therefore, I went to the side and portrayed the monk sideways to give more space and room for his aura. Sounds very spiritual and it is a bit. That is the challenge of photography. Unfortunately, I had to do some trickery afterwards to make the background disappear. With my knowledge of today, I would try it again differently and blend two to three images to get the result.
